Today, we will learn about the FAPI-PET scan, which is providing a new direction in cancer treatment. Hello, I am Dr. Abhay Gondane, Nuclear Medicine Consultant at HCG Manavata Cancer Centre, Nashik. Today, I will explain the FAPI-PET scan in simple language—what it is, how it works, and why it is important for cancer patients. For the past 10 to 15 years, we have been using FDG-PET scans for almost every type of cancer. However, many cancers, such as stomach cancer, intestinal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and ovarian cancer in women, do not appear very clearly on FDG-PET scans. Therefore, scientists have developed the FAPI drug. A FAPI-PET scan is an advanced molecular medicine technique. FAPI stands for 'Fibroblast Activation Protein Inhibitor.' Cancer cells have an environment around them called the 'micro-environment,' where cancer-associated fibroblasts are found. When we inject this drug into a patient's body, it attaches itself to those fibroblasts. When we scan the patient using a PET-CT scanner, the location of the cancer and its spread in the body are visible with extreme precision. Compared to FDG-PET scans, FAPI-PET scans have some distinct advantages: For an FDG-PET scan, the patient must remain fasting for four to six hours, whereas no fasting is required for a FAPI-PET scan. The location and spread of cancer are identified more accurately in FAPI-PET compared to FDG-PET. It is an easier and more comfortable procedure. FAPI-PET scans have significant utility in cancer treatment: To determine the extent of spread when a new cancer is diagnosed. To evaluate the effectiveness of an ongoing cancer treatment. To detect cancer recurrence. This scan is safe, involves very low radiation exposure, and is painless. In most cases, the procedure is completed in a single day. The FAPI-PET scan is providing a new direction in cancer treatment. A more accurate diagnosis leads to a more accurate treatment.
